Raptors Host Barbos In Exhibition Match

By John Arthur

The Raptors host the Denver Barbarians this weekend in a free admission match, kicking off at 7pm Mountain Time at Infinity Park. The next in a series of off-season exhibition matches, this weekend’s contest will provide Glendale additional time to prepare for the second season of professional play with Major League Rugby.

Raptors Forwards Coach Ted Browner will be at the helm Saturday, guiding a young and possibly experimental Raptors squad against a strong local opponent in the Barbarians. Asked about how the Saturday match will shake out, Browner is looking forward to seeing new Raptors in action: “We are building and developing for 2019. We’ll have some exciting new faces on the pitch: Jason Damm and Colin Gregory out of Clemson, to name just two,” he said. “We want to see how they perform Saturday and have them continue trialing with us.”

Glendale’s Head Coach David Williams won’t be on the pitch this weekend, instead traveling with breakout Raptors Academy star Mika Kruse and pro Prop Kelepi Fifita to the America’s Pacific Challenge in Uruguay. Introduced in 2016 and taking place in Montevideo for the third year running, the competition will continue to boost the high-performance pathway for U.S. players and could push Glendale’s players toward appointment on the Eagles World Cup National Team.

Come early on Saturday and catch the Women’s Premier League match between the Glendale Merlins and Oregon Sports Union at 5pm MT in the stadium at Infinity Park.

The Raptors’ next match will see the team once again at home, hosting the Utah Warriors on a newly installed, World Rugby approved turf pitch in Infinity Park’s Open Space. The match will be free and open to the public. Kick off is at 5pm Mountain Time.
